Description
This is a three-storey terrace house with an attic and basement, dating from 1775 to 1780. It is part of the Rivers Street development by John Wood the Younger.
The front of the building is faced with limestone ashlar, with rendering to the basement. The rear has a double pile roof covered with Welsh slate, and a parapeted mansard to the front. The rear elevation combines ashlar and rubble construction, with double Roman bricks built up to the third floor. There are two ashlar chimney stacks on the left side.
The front has a symmetrical arrangement. The first floor has three grouped plate glass sash windows with horns, set in splayed reveals with a continuous stone sill. The second floor mirrors this design. The ground floor features eight/eight sash windows in splayed reveals with a stone sill, with a 20th-century balconette to the right. A six-panel door, with flush, moulded, and glazed panels, is set within a pedimented Doric doorcase. A concrete paved crossover is flush with the pavement. The basement windows are plate glass sash windows in splayed reveals. A 20th-century glazed door with an overlight is located within a boarded screen beneath the crossover, and there are no area steps. Double dormers incorporate plate glass sash windows. Inside the building, a timber bressumer and stone band course run over the ground floor, topped by a modillion cornice and a coped parapet. The interior has not been inspected.
Attached to the front are wrought iron railings set on limestone bases.
Rivers Street was developed in three parcels of land, with differing lease arrangements. Numbers 1 to 11 were built in conjunction with Catharine Place; numbers 16 to 28 and 36 to 47 with ground conveyed from the Rivers Estate; and numbers 28 to 35 in conjunction with Russell Street. A strip of land on which numbers 12 to 15 and 48 to 50 stand was likely never acquired by Wood. Several Bath builders implemented Wood's design.
