Description
No. 48 is an early 19th-century house with 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front, with rubble to the basement and painted ashlar to the rear. The roof is parapeted and has double Roman tiles to the front and Welsh slate to the rear. There are two stacks: one large and one small, against the flank wall of the adjacent No. 47 Rivers Street, and a large stack to the front, now without pots.
The house has three storeys and a basement, with a two-window front. The first floor has two four-pane sashes in splayed reveals with a continuous stone sill. The second floor has two six-pane sashes, also in splayed reveals with a continuous stone sill. The ground floor has a six-pane sash in a splayed reveal with a lowered stone sill and a wrought iron balconette to the left, and a six-panel door with a flush, fielded panel and a single glazed panel within a beaded reveal and a moulded hood on console brackets which is continuous with No. 49 Rivers Street. A Pennant paved crossover, flush with the pavement, is shared with No. 49 Rivers Street. The basement has two 20th-century four-pane sashes in splayed reveals with a continuous stone sill, a 20th-century door in an ashlar infilling under the crossover, and 20th-century area steps. A band course runs over the ground floor, there is a moulded eaves cornice, and a coped parapet. The rear elevation has two/two and plate glass horned sashes to the upper floors.
The interior was not inspected. Attached are wrought iron railings and a gate with shaped beads on limestone bases. The house is part of the later westward continuation of Rivers Street, leading into Rivers Street Mews, and consists of smaller, more austerely fronted houses.
