Description

No. 49 is a house dating from the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The front is made of limestone ashlar, while the basement is constructed from rubble, and the rear features a mix of ashlar and rubble. The building has a double pile roof that is parapeted at the front, with double Roman tiles on the front and pantiles at the rear. There is a large ashlar chimney stack on the right, which is shared with No. 50 Rivers Street.

The house stands three storeys tall with a basement and has two windows on each upper floor, along with a single door located to the right. The ground and first floor windows are six-over-six sashes that have cast iron balconettes. The entrance features a modern panelled door with an over-light set within a beaded reveal, topped by a moulded hood supported by console brackets, which continues from No. 48. A band course runs above the ground floor, and there is a moulded eaves cornice and parapet above. The basement has a pair of modern eight-over-eight sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills, and a 20th-century door is located under the cross-over of Pennant stone.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this house is part of the later westward extension of Rivers Street, which leads into Rivers Street Mews, and features smaller houses with more austere facades.
