RIVERS STREET 656-1/30/1421 (South side) 11/08/72 No.49 and attached railings (Formerly Listed as: RIVERS STREET (South side) Nos.48, 49 AND 50 (Chequers Public House))

House. Early C19 with C20 alterations. MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to basement, ashlar and rubble to rear, double pile roof, parapeted to front, double Romans to front, pantile to rear, large ashlar stack with some early clay pots to right shared with No.50 Rivers Street (qv). EXTERIOR: Three storeys and basement; two-windows per upper floor, single door to right of door. Six/six sashes with cast iron balconettes to ground and first floor windows. Modern panelled door with over-light within beaded reveal, below a moulded hood on console brackets, continuous with No.48. Band course over ground floor; moulded eaves cornice and parapet above. Basement with pair of modern eight/eight sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills, C20 door under cross-over of Pennant stone. INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: Part of the later westward continuation of Rivers Street, running into Rivers Street Mews, consisting of smaller and more austerely fronted houses.
