Description

No. 17 is a house, dating to approximately 1771-1773, and later converted into flats during the 20th century. It was designed by John Wood the Younger. The front is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a double-pipe mansard roof covered with artificial slate. The rear also has artificial slate, with a coped party wall to the right. This wall incorporates two ashlar stacks, placed back-to-back with those of the adjacent No. 18 Bennett Street.

The house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, presenting a three-window front. The first floor has three nine-pane sashes set within splayed, ovolo-moulded architraves, featuring friezes and cornices, with lowered stone sills. A continuous wrought iron balcony with a slatted iron deck runs along this floor. The second floor mirrors this design with three six-pane sashes in similar architraves and stone sills. On the ground floor, there are two six-pane sashes towards the right and an eight-panel door to the left. The door has fielded panels, a reeded frieze, and a tall plate glass overlight set in a beaded reveal that extends almost to the band course. A Pennant paved crossover, flush with the pavement and paved with three large Pennant slabs, incorporates a cast iron footscraper. The basement has two six-pane sashes, and a 20th-century half-glazed door is set within an ashlar infilling underneath the crossover. Limestone area steps with Pennant inserts form the treads, accompanied by a wrought iron handrail. There are one single and one double dormer window, each with six-pane sashes. A band course runs above the ground floor, and a modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet extend continuously with No. 18 Russell Street and No. 16 Bennett Street. A lead hopperhead and downpipe are located on the left side, shared with No. 16 Bennett Street. The rear elevation, partially visible, features plate glass sashes. The interior was not inspected during the listing process. Attached to the property are wrought iron railings and a gate, with shaped heads on limestone bases.
