Description
This is a house, built around 1771 to 1773 and later converted into flats in the 20th century. It was designed by John Wood the Younger. The front of the house is faced with limestone ashlar, while the rear is not visible. It has a double-pile, parapeted mansard roof covered with Welsh slate to the front and artificial slate to the rear. The right side has a coped party wall with two ashlar stacks: one stack has some early clay pots, while the other does not. A staircase is located at the rear.
The house is three storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has a three-window front. The first floor features three plate glass sash windows within splayed, ovolo-moulded architraves, with friezes and cornices, and lowered moulded stone sills. A continuous wrought iron balcony with a slatted iron deck runs along this floor. The second floor has three similar plate glass, horned sash windows with splayed jambs and stone sills. The ground floor has two plate glass sash windows to the right, within splayed reveals and stone sills, and a door to the left, consisting of eight fielded panels with a single glazed panel, situated on a single Pennant stone step within a cyma moulded architrave. This architrave has a flat surround with heavy moulded console brackets supporting a projecting moulded cornice, creating a hood over the door. Two steps lead to a Pennant-paved crossover with a cast iron footscraper. The basement has a six/six sash window with a stone sill, with a blocked former sash window to the right, now containing a 20th-century window and a concrete roof. A plank door with a small overlight sits within an ashlar infilling under the crossover; there are no area steps. Two dormers with two/two horned sashes are present in the roof. A band course runs above the ground floor, and a modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet continue with numbers 18 Russell Street and 17 Bennett Street. A lead hopperhead and downpipe are located on the right side, and are shared with number 17 Bennett Street. The rear elevation is not visible. The interior was not inspected. Attached wrought iron railings and a gate, with shaped heads on concrete-coated bases, are also part of the property.
