Description

3 Cleveland Place East is an irregular terrace house that has been converted into a shop. It is set slightly forward from the adjacent buildings and was likely designed by H.E. Goodridge around 1827 to 1830, with alterations made around 1900. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with the roof not visible and stacks located at the party walls.

The structure has four storeys, including an attic, and features a single window width. It has a coped parapet, a cornice, and a cornice band at the attic storey, with a second cornice and cornice band that serves as a lintel band for the second floor. The windows include tripartite designs with margin panes, a three-over-three pane sash in the attic, a six-over-six pane sash with panelled mullions and an apron on the second floor, and a six-over-nine pane sash with panelled mullions on the first floor. The shop front, dating from around 1900, has a set-back central door.

Internally, the building was inspected by Bath Council in 1987 and features a timber stair with a Doric newel. The first floor has a green, black, white, and grey marble fireplace with glazed arched cupboards on either side, and an early Victorian console fireplace with low cupboards in the back room. No. 2 has similar stairs, a stone fireplace, and a Regency hob in the rear room.

This building is part of the Late Georgian Cleveland Place and Bridge development of the Bathwick Estate and has contained a shop since it was built.
