Description

1 and 2 Canton Place are a pair of shops located at the western end of Walcot Terrace. They were built in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The buildings are constructed from painted limestone ashlar and feature a slate mansard roof with moulded stacks along the party wall.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, arranged in a symmetrical five-window layout. There is a continuous coped parapet, a cornice, and a string course at the second floor sill. The ground floor has banded rustication and includes blind windows on the party wall, which has a bracket for a former hanging sign.

No. 1, on the right, has six-over-six pane sash windows on the upper floors, except for the first floor left window, which features a wheel motif at the center of a cast iron balcony with curved corners, similar to those found on Cleveland Place West. Below the balcony is an altered early 19th-century projecting shop window with rounded upper corners, containing three plate glass panes and railings below a moulded sill. To the right of this window is a half-glazed door with a reeded lintel and a blocked overlight.

No. 2 has plate glass sash windows without horns on the upper floors, with the left window being slightly narrower. The ground floor features a late 19th-century shopfront, which is topped by a continuous cornice and fascia above a central three-pane plate glass shop window. To the left is a four-panel door with margin panes and a painted overlight, while to the right is a glazed door with a blocked overlight. The interiors have not been inspected.
