Description
No. 17 is a terrace house built between 1764 and 1770, with some alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and has a slate roof. The house is a generous town house featuring a double mansard roof and an entry with a staircase to the left.
The exterior consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement. It has a single bay with plain sash windows, including three twelve-pane sash dormers above a tripartite window on the second floor, which is set in splayed surrounds and topped with a floating cornice. The ground floor features paired plain sash windows in splayed surrounds. To the left, there is a six-panel door framed by an architrave, topped with a broken pediment supported by pilasters with consoles. A platband runs above the ground floor, and there is a modillion cornice with stopped ends, a blocking course, and a parapet. The party divisions are coped, with deep stacks to the right and straight joints on each side.
Inside, the house boasts very fine cornicing. The property also has simple railings on a stone curb that return at the ends and enclose the basement area. The external fabric of the building reflects the staggered history of the terrace, which has a consistent overall detail but shows variations in elevations due to its construction in small sections.
