CLEVELAND PLACE WEST (West side) Columns in Garden of No.4 05/08/75 II

Ionic Column and upper part of column from St Mary's Chapel, Queen Square by John Wood the Elder. Bath stone. Chapel built 1732-34, demolished 1875 when columns were moved to the present site. Intact column approx 20m south-west of No.4 Cleveland Place West (qv), and has wrought iron lamp bracket on abacus. Half column close to house. HISTORY: These columns formed the central feature of the In antis portico of this proprietary chapel, situated to the South-west of Queen Square. Compare the re-assembled elements from the chapel reassembled to form the Temple Ornament on the North side of Chapel Row.
