Description
The columns in the garden of No. 4 Cleveland Place West are Ionic columns originally from St Mary's Chapel in Queen Square, designed by John Wood the Elder. The chapel was built between 1732 and 1734 and was demolished in 1875, at which time the columns were relocated to their current site. One intact column stands approximately 20 meters southwest of No. 4 Cleveland Place West and features a wrought iron lamp bracket on its abacus. A half column is positioned close to the house. These columns were the central feature of the portico of the chapel, which was located southwest of Queen Square. They can be compared to the re-assembled elements from the chapel that were used to create the Temple Ornament on the north side of Chapel Row.
