Description

A group of four chest tombs is located to the southeast of the lych gate at the Parish Church of St. Swithun's. These tombs date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are made of ashlar. They feature panelled sides and a moulded cornice. The first two tombs have fluted pilasters with paterae and a decorative frieze, along with inscribed panels that are illegible. The third tomb dates to 1810 and also has inscribed panels. The fourth tomb, from the mid to late 18th century, is adorned with carved foliage on the corner pilasters, a decorative frieze, and a central oval panel. These chest tombs in Bathford churchyard represent a significant collection of classical and traditional local tomb forms, enhancing the church's setting.
