Description

The Parish Church of St. Swithun's has Romanesque origins and was restored by F. Preedy of London and Worcester. The west tower was built between 1879 and 1880, while the north aisle and porch were added in 1856. The south aisle and nave were constructed between 1870 and 1872, along with the chancel and north and south chancel chapels. The church is built of coursed, squared rubble with freestone dressings and has a slate roof.

The west tower features three stages, a pierced parapet with finials, angle buttresses, and two-light lancet openings in the bell chamber. The aisles have panelled bracery with foiled heads. The nave consists of three bays with Early English style arcades, and the chancel has two bays.

Inside, there is a 13th-century octagonal font with a scalloped underside and a finely carved Jacobean pulpit, which is raised on a stone base by Preedy from 1870 and features a Biblical text on its frieze. There are also monuments, including two lettered tablets in the north wall of the chancel for Philip Ellis (1661) and Thomas Hendy (1676), and in the south wall for Marie Herd (1674) and Elizabeth Phillips (1759) by John Ford of Bath.
