Description
A group of 35 chest tombs located to the east of the Parish Church of St. Swithun's, dating from the mid to late 18th century and early 19th century. These tombs are made of ashlar and most feature panelled sides with moulded cornices. Notable examples include the tomb of Ann Nelson from 1785, who was the sister of Lord Nelson, and the adjacent tomb of Elizabeth Mateham from 1805, which has fluted pilasters and an octagonal shape with a decorative top. The Shrine family tomb, located by the south wall, dates from 1785 and later, is also octagonal, featuring a marble panel, an urn on a pedestal, and a low surrounding ashlar wall. To the left of the Shrine tomb is the Fisher tomb from 1760, which has oval panels, corner balusters, and a frieze. To the right are two large tombs belonging to the Wiltshire family of Shockerwick, dating from around 1810 with square marble panels and from the 1840s with cusped panels. West of the Shrine tomb is the McClintock tomb from 1801, which has square, marble shield-shaped panels and a draped urn, and the Stone tomb from 1807, which is octagonal with fluted pilasters and oval panels. The chest tombs in Bathford Churchyard represent a significant and extensive collection of classical and traditional local tomb forms, greatly enhancing the setting of the church.
