Description

A row of five cottages, originally dated 1633 on weathered stone below the rear gable, but mostly dating to the early 19th century with a 1968 restoration following flood damage. Nos 4 and 5, located at the foot of the hill, are early 19th century in date. The cottages are constructed of coursed rubble with brick dressings to the ground floor window heads. They have ashlar copings and gabled pantile roofs with brick stacks at the ends and ridge.

The original plan of Nos 1, 2, and 3 was a three-unit design, retaining a central stair turret to the rear, later altered to become three cottages. Nos 4 and 5 have single-unit plans.

Each cottage is two storeys high with a two-window range, except for the central cottage (No.3), which has a single window range. The windows are predominantly early 19th century casements with 2 or 3 lights, set under cambered brick heads on the ground floor. The first-floor windows are flat-headed paired casements. Shutters are present on the first floor of Nos 3 and 4; No.2 has late 20th century casements to the first floor. The cottages have plank doors with glazed lights. A wrought-iron porch is at No.3, and a gabled wooden porch with bargeboard at No.4. Cottage No.5 is on the south-east corner and to the rear, featuring an outshut to the ground floor and similar casements under cambered heads on the first floor. Late 20th-century flat-roofed extensions are also present.

The interior was not inspected.

Historically, the cottages were rented by the parish as poor houses in the early 19th century.

They form a group with Dapp's Hill Bridge and Nos 6, 7, and 8 Chew Cottages, Dapp's Hill.
