Description
33 Sion Hill is a detached house built around 1840, positioned at a right angle to the road. The building features limestone ashlar, which is painted on the ground floor of the street front, and has a slate roof with wide eaves that are gabled at both the front and rear. Moulded stacks are located on the left return and at the rear.
The house has three storeys and a side elevation that is a single window width facing the street. It includes a narrow six-panel door, which is glazed at the top, situated beneath a plat band. The first and second floors are adorned with two-light, four-pane casement windows that have Tudor arched lights, label moulds, and cast iron balconettes at the center. The eaves are unusually designed with diagonally sloping boarded timber.
The principal elevation faces south. On the ground floor, there are outer pairs of casement windows with hood-moulds, and the inner opening features half-glazed double doors set within a shallow four-centred arch. The first floor has similar two-light windows on the left and a four-light window on the right. The second floor showcases paired two-light stone mullioned windows in raised surrounds, with remnants of a former label mould cut off by the eaves, suggesting that the house may have originally had a parapet or higher eaves.
The stonework on the right return indicates that the building was once two separate units and two storeys high. The ground floor also displays label moulds above blocked two-light windows, and the Tudor-arched doorway has been converted into a window. The interior has not been inspected.
