Description
Gothic Cottage is an ornate building dating to 1797. It is constructed with a Flemish-bond brick facade, random brickwork to the returns, and Bath stone dressings. The roof is double pitched, covered in double Roman tiles, and features brick bases to the moulded stacks on the returns and rear.
The building is a two-storey, symmetrical three-window front range. A central ogee-arched door with six flush panels, glazed to the top, has a cast iron knocker. It is flanked by hip-roofed stone-slated lean-tos running across the front, incorporating a porch in the centre and rows of four-light small-paned casement windows either side, with thicker glazing bars to the Gothic overlights. The first floor features three ogee-arched six/six-pane sash windows with stone dressings; the facade also includes classical rusticated quoins, a coped parapet, a returned cornice, and a cornice band above.
The interior retains panelled doors with Gothick motifs in the drawing room and study. A coved ceiling with cable moulding is present in the breakfast room, while the dining room has a Gothick grey marble chimney piece. Gothic plasterwork can be found in the hall and elsewhere. A stone staircase with iron rails decorated with Gothick motifs, and a mahogany handrail, is also present.
According to the Bath Directory of 1862, James Dredge, the engineer who designed the Victoria Bridge, lived in Gothic Cottage. The house is notable for its unusual combination of materials and its mixture of Gothic and classical design elements. A drawing of the cottage before alterations to the front is held in the Bath Reference Library.
