Description

Big Pennies House is a Grade II listed office building that was originally a house, dating from the early 17th century. It features a four-bay design and has been partially refronted in the early 19th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building is timber framed, with square framing visible on the first floor, while the ground floor is constructed of brown brick. The south elevation is tile hung. It has a half-hipped tiled roof with multiple brick stacks and stands two storeys tall with four windows, which are modern casement windows. The ground floor includes a modern penticed six-light square bay and a modern gabled brick weather porch. Inside, there is a 17th-century door made of three planks, featuring an elaborate stop with both lamb's tongue and broach motifs, which is more typical of the late 17th century. The house is believed to have been built around 1604, and its name comes from the original owner, whose wife Agnes was buried in 1624, as noted in the Cuckfield Parish Register.
