Description

The water tower of St Francis' Hospital, built in 1859 by H E Kendall junior, is part of the Lunatic Asylum complex. It is constructed of yellow brick with red brick decoration and features a roof concealed by an elaborate parapet. The tower has a square plan and stands six storeys tall, topped with elongated domed bastions and a suggestion of battlements. Most storeys include two round-headed casement windows, while the fourth storey has rectangular openings outlined by brick impost bands. This design presents an elaborate treatment for a functional building and is styled similarly to the hospital.
