Description
Peter’s Cottage is a late 16th-century, two-bay timber-framed cottage located on New England Road, Haywards Heath. The original part of the cottage was refaced in the late 18th or early 19th century and extended in the 20th century. The north front exhibits exposed square framing with some diagonal bracing. The west front has a red brick ground floor and tile hanging on the first floor. The roof is half-hipped and tiled, with a chimney stack set back behind the ridge line. The cottage has two storeys. Windows include a modern casement on the north side, two modern casements on the west side, and one four-light and one two-light window. A later 19th-century doorcase with a plank door and penticed tiled weatherboard is incorporated into a lean-to extension. A two-storey brick service extension, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century and originally with a simple plank door, was altered in the early 20th century to create additional accommodation on the east side. Internally, the cottage features a spine beam with run-out stops and some exposed square framing. Documentary evidence indicates the property was sold in 1595, as noted in "The Metropolis of Mid Sussex."
