Description
The War Memorial at Western Road Municipal Cemetery in Haywards Heath is a limestone and ashlar structure commemorating those who fell in war between 1914 and 1919. It features a simple carved stone crucifixion with an INRI scroll above, located on the north side of the cemetery. The crucifixion is set into a socket that rests on a four-step calvary. The socket is inscribed with the words 'PRAY FOR THE SOULS OF THOSE FALLEN IN THE WAR 1914-1919'. The memorial, which stands about 2 meters high, faces west, while the other sides are plain with no additional decoration or inscriptions.
Although not recorded on the National Inventory of War Memorials, this memorial is believed to have been erected around 1920. The Register of Graves maintained by Haywards Heath Town Council indicates that Mrs. Emma Francis Stanton purchased two plots at the cemetery for the purpose of erecting this memorial.
The War Memorial is designated at Grade II due to its simple yet elegant design, featuring a stone crucifix that reflects the impact of tragic world events on the local community.
