Description
Gravelye House was built in 1825-1826 by John Smith, a Member of Parliament from Dale Park, Madehurst, near Arundel, for the Quaker William Allen of "Allen and Hanburys." Together with John Smith and the Earl of Chichester, they established the Allotment Colony in Lindfield known as "America," aimed at helping the poor of Lindfield. William Allen passed away in this house in 1843. The building is two storeys high with six windows and is finished in stucco with a slate roof. It features two parallel ranges, with the front range having a central section of four windows and slightly recessed wings, the southern wing having a ground floor window only. There is a stringcourse, and the glazing bars are intact. The ground floor includes round-headed windows with Gothic glazing set in arcading. The porch is supported by square Doric columns and has a projecting cornice. Above the roof of the back range, there is a small cupola that contains a bell.
