Description

Lindfield Junior School Social Centre, formerly known as the National School, was built in 1851 by builder Amon Anscombe. The building is constructed from local West Hoathly brick, which has a brownish mottled texture. The southwest front is cement rendered, and it features a slate roof with plain bargeboards and pendants. The structure is one storey high with a gable end and a similar but lower range at the rear. The front has four tripartite mullioned and transomed casements, while the side has two narrower windows and a double casement at the rear range.

There is a central gabled porch that includes a two-centred arched doorcase on each side, which originally provided separate entrances for boys and girls. The doors are 20th-century plank doors. The interior is plain, with an inserted stage, and there is a plaque recording a benefaction of £200. After 1881, when the adjoining Board school was built, this National School transitioned to serve as a Sunday school, then a village Reading Room, and finally a social centre. It is currently used as a school hall by the adjoining Lindfield Junior School. The plans for this building can be found in the West Sussex Record Office. Although the porch details differ from the plans, it appears to be of the same construction. A deed dated August 25th, 1851, conveyed the property "to the Minister and Churchwardens of Lindfield upon trust to permit the said premises and all buildings thereon erected, or to be erected, to be forever hereafter appropriated and used as and for a school for the education of children and adults, or children only, of the labouring, manufacturing and other poorer classes of the Parish of Lindfield aforesaid and for no other purpose."
