Description

Hospital Farmhouse is a mid-16th century building, originally a farmhouse and later used as part of St Francis' Hospital. It was altered in 1660, as indicated by a datestone over the door, and has a 19th-century addition to the rear. The building is constructed of Tudor red bricks in English bond, with vitrified headers, and has sandstone dressings. The roof is of Horsham stone slabs, with two end chimney stacks built of brick.

The farmhouse is T-shaped, with two storeys, attic space, and a semi-basement. The south-east facing principal elevation has five bays of windows, largely original four-light sandstone mullioned windows, with single-light windows at each end. The ground floor has two two-light mullioned windows flanking a central four-centred sandstone doorway bearing the initials "IM" and the date 1660. A deep sandstone plinth and two moulded cornices are also present. Gable ends feature sandstone moulded coping and kneelers. The rear elevation retains a full set of stone mullioned windows. A cellar for storage lies beneath the south-west portion of the building, with a separate access.

Inside, there are spine beams with lambs tongue stops. The upper floor to the attic is purported to contain a fine Elizabethan staircase, although this has not been inspected. The roof is believed to have been altered around 1660.

The building is designated II* because of its fine 16th-century brickwork, the retention of a large number of original mullioned windows, and internal features.
