Description
Cleavewater is a house that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, originally built as a Wealden hall-house. It underwent remodelling in the 18th century and has early to mid-19th century additions at the front, creating a T-shaped plan. The rear section features a mix of timber framing and tile hanging on the first floor, while the ground floor is constructed of red brick with grey headers and some ashlar. The roof is covered with Horsham slabs and includes a large, central stepped chimney stack from the 16th century, along with an end chimney stack.
The T-wing facing the road is made of early to mid-19th century Sussex sandstone, complete with a plinth and a discontinuous string course. It has a hipped tiled roof and a large panelled stack. The building is two storeys high and has two windows on the front. The front features two triple mid-19th century sash windows with a broken string course that forms keystones above the ground floor windows. There is also a single central 19th century doorcase with four panels. The rear part of the house includes a mix of 19th century casements and sashes.
