Description
The Crown Inn is a late 18th century or early 19th century building located on the south side of Carfax. It is an L-shaped block, with the east wing being of the same period but having a lower elevation. The building has two storeys and features three windows facing both the north-west and north-east. The exterior is finished in painted roughcast, with plaster below the ground floor stringcourse, and it has hipped slate roofs with an eaves cornice.
Each front has a doorway adorned with fluted half-columns and a rusticated arch, topped with a semi-circular fanlight and a six-panel moulded door. The north-west side has two bays of three lights on both floors, while the north-east side has three windows. All sash windows retain their glazing bars. The east wing includes an additional rusticated doorway and a plain round-headed doorway. A late 19th century wing was added to the south-west. The Crown Inn is part of a group with Nos 4 to 7 and No 36, which collectively relate to Nos 9, 9A, 9B, and 10 Middle Street.
