Description
No. 4 Carfax is a mid to late 19th-century building that stands two to three storeys high. It features an asymmetrically placed gable-end facing north with one window. The building is constructed of painted brick and has a slate roof. On the second floor, there are paired square-headed lights divided by a colonnette that has a moulded base, annulet, and capital. The windows have chamfered lintels and sills. A similar triplet of windows is found on the first floor. To the west, there is a two-storey bow-fronted section with a crenellated parapet and three pairs of windows treated in the same manner. The ground floor has a modern office front. Additionally, there is another two-storey bow-fronted section in Colletts Alley, which includes a three-storey and basement area behind. This section is also made of painted brick, with some windows similar to those described and some single lights, as well as one projecting dormer. Nos. 4 to 7 (consecutive) and No. 36 form a group with Nos. 9, 9A, 9B, and 10 Middle Street.
