Description

No 1 South Street is a large warehouse with shops underneath, located at the corner of South Street and Middle Street. It was built in the mid-19th century and stands three storeys tall. The building features painted brickwork, with the ground floor stuccoed. It has a half-hipped slate roof topped with an iron decorative railing, which encloses an octagonal lantern with overhanging eaves supported by small brackets, and a spike on top.

The main eaves extend outwards and are adorned with a moulded cornice that is supported by curved brackets. There is one window facing west and one facing north, with both fronts also having a blocked window space towards the northwest corner. All windows have segmental heads, with the north face featuring triplet windows. The sashes and glazing bars are intact. On the west side, there are circular moulded braces.

In the centre of the west front, there are double loading doors, each with four panels, located on the second floor, accompanied by a hinged pulley on a decorative bracket to the left. Below these, there are similar double doors, but with the upper two panels removed for glazing. Both sets of doors have hinged ramps that fold over the bottoms. Above the ground floor, there is a heavily moulded cornice supported by pilasters, which merge with the building's plinth.

The ground floor is curved to fit the corner into Middle Street, and a moulded ogee shape appears above the cornice. The original shop fronts remain on both sides of the building, with the north one projecting. The north front features recessed double doors, with the upper parts removed for glazing.

This building is part of an important group of listed buildings in South Street, which includes Nos 1 to 7 (odd) Blackhorse Way, The Manor House, the stables to the south, and Nos 24 to 31 (consecutive) Causeway. Nos 1 to 4 (consecutive) also form a group with Nos 5 and 5A Middle Street.
