Description

Number 18, The Arundel Emporium, is a furniture repository dating to around 1880, subsequently used as offices and a restaurant. The building is constructed of red brick with decorative courses of yellow/red brick, featuring segmental arches surrounding the windows. It has a brick eaves cornice and a slate roof with brick chimneys. The building is three storeys high, with a two-storey lean-to section at the east end, and a double-gabled roof.

The south elevation, facing the street, has an arcaded front on the ground floor with five archways. The central archway is taller and features a stone keystone. A range of fixed windows and a central glazed double door are behind the arches, and all are now blocked. At the west end is a larger arch with a stone keystone, containing a double wooden garage door. The east end lean-to section was altered around 1991 to include an arched entrance, mirroring the west end, which leads to a flight of brick steps. The first floor has six double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, and a small window in the lean-to section, replaced with a double-hung sash window in 1991. The second floor also has six double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The east elevation has three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the second floor, along with a painted sign. The west elevation is similar to the east, with the two windows having a different glazing bar configuration. An inventory of furniture held at Sparks’ Depository, dated 14 January 1882, is documented in the Arundel Castle MSS IN71.
