Description

Avola House is a late 18th-century building located on Tarrant Street. It is constructed of red brick, with the south elevation rendered. The house features a hipped tile roof and red and grey brick chimneys. It has two storeys and attics, with a plain stringcourse at eaves level and a parapet that masks the roof.

The south elevation includes three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor and two on the ground floor, which flank a porch. The porch has an ogival lead roof supported by a three-centred arch with a wooden keystone at the front and straight entablatures on the sides, held up by Tuscan columns and pilasters. The attic dormers have casements with glazing bars.

On the east elevation, there is an eaves cornice with cyma reversa modillions, a range of blocked windows, two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor, and a triple-hung sash window without glazing bars on the ground floor. There is also a six-panelled door, partly glazed, set in a moulded frame with five brick steps, three made of Bognor Rock and one of limestone, arched over the gutter. Additionally, there is a planked cellar door with a segmental head framed by a semi-circular relieving arch made of grey headers.

The property features a terraced garden to the south, which is flanked by a brick retaining wall with a ramping top. There is a planked door in the east wall that leads to a vaulted cellar beneath the terrace.
