Description

These are a pair of late 18th-century buildings on Tarrant Street. The north elevation is of red brick, while the other elevations are of beach flint with red brick dressings. The brickwork features rubbed and gauged brick voussoirs. The roof is slate, with red brick chimneys and red brick blocking courses to the gable ends, finished with slate coping.

The buildings are two storeys high with basements. They have a brick modillion eaves cornice. The symmetrical ground floor features a three-centred arch framing two planked doors, one of which retains its original latch and keyhole. A flight of 10 brick steps, divided by a wall of beach flint, leads to two brick-paved courtyards behind the arch. Flanking the arch are two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, paired with casement windows with glazing bars to the basement level. The first floor has five double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, one of which is blocked in number 53. A two-storey nodular flint extension is to the south of number 53, featuring casement windows with glazing bars. Limestone paving stones are laid in front of the three central bays.

Numbers 43 to 57 (odd), and the wall between numbers 49 and 51 form a group.
