Description

This is an 18th-century building, marked on a 1785 map, situated on Tarrant Street. The south and west elevations are constructed of painted brick, while the east elevation features nodular flint with red brick dressings. It has a hipped tile roof with a catslide extension, and red brick chimneys. The building is two storeys high with attics. A brick eaves cornice with modillions runs along the top.

The south elevation has a modern segmental bow window at the front, alongside tripartite double-hung sash windows with glazing bars at either end. These replace earlier 18th-century shop windows. A single double-hung sash window with glazing bars is also present, along with a plain brick stringcourse above voussoirs, resembling a feature found at number 2 Baker’s Arms Hill. The doorway has a flat hood with a panelled soffit, supported by moulded consoles, leading to a modern door accessed by five steps and flanked by modern iron railings. The first floor has five double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, and two attic dormers with casement windows, one featuring glazing bars.

The north elevation has a catslide roof with one tile-hung gable and has been extensively modernised, as has the north wing. The east elevation is composed of two ranges, while the west elevation has a single range, each featuring double-hung sash windows with glazing bars.
