Description

Nos 86 and 88 on Brighton Road are a pair of houses built in the 1880s. They are constructed from Bargate rubblestone and feature decoratively-banded tile-hung gables, topped with a plain tile roof. The houses are 1½ storeys high and consist of four bays arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. The symmetrical facade has two wide central bays that project with a jettied upper floor beneath paired gables, while the narrow outer bays are recessed. Each outer bay has a board door with three glazed panes set within an open, pent-roofed porch.

The central bays each contain a wooden, four-light window with mullions and a transom, along with a cornice at the ground floor. There is a brick band at the first floor and a similar corbelled bay window with a tiled roof above. The houses feature cusped moulded bargeboards and a central ribbed cross-ridge stack made of brick on a stone base. The returns of the houses each have a single-light window at the ground floor, a brick jetty at the upper floor, which has paired single-light casements under a continuous, bracketed, hipped tile roof, and oversailing eaves. These houses are included for their group value.
