Description

Forge Cottage is a mid-16th century cottage with two and a half bays. Originally, it featured a smoke hood, and an outside chimney was added around 1600. A late 18th-century wing was added to the front of the cottage. The original part of the building is timber framed, with some of the framing recently exposed on the east elevation, featuring ironstone infill and a brick underbuild on the ground floor. The gable end is tile hung, while the rear elevation is roughcast. The cottage has a tiled roof with an end brick chimneystack. The front includes a gabled dormer with a 20th-century PVC casement window, one 19th-century casement window, and a six-panelled door with the top two panels glazed. A small original wooden casement window has recently been uncovered near the chimney on the north elevation. The late 18th-century wing is made of painted brick and also has a tiled roof.

Inside, there is an open fireplace with a wooden lintel and a niche. The central spine beam is chamfered with a roll stop. On the first floor, the wall frame is exposed, showing diagonal braces and wattle and daub, along with old floorboards and sockets for diamond mullioned windows. The 18th-century wing features a two-storey pine partition and two panelled doors, as well as an 18th-century cellar with four semi-circular alcoves.
