Description

The Tilford War Memorial is situated in a prominent location next to All Saints’ Church on Tilford Road, within a paved stone semi-circular enclosure that is accessed by three steps. The enclosure features a low stone wall approximately 1 meter high, which frames the memorial.

The memorial itself consists of a Portland stone hooded calvary cross, topped with a figure of Christ crucified, which is set on a tapered column that stands on a square plinth. This is elevated on a square base with three steps.

On the west face of the plinth, there are inscriptions and names carved, which read: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF TILFORD WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." Below this inscription are the names of 29 individuals who lost their lives in the First World War.

The north face of the plinth bears the inscription: "THE FREE GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE," while the south face reads: "BEHOLD WE CALLED THEM BLESSED WHICH ENDURED."

Additionally, a rectangular stone plaque was later affixed to the west face of the enclosure wall, inscribed with: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WAR." This plaque lists the names of 23 men who lost their lives in the Second World War, with the years 1939 and 1945 inscribed on either side.
