Description

The Twigworth War Memorial was erected in 1920 and later extended to include commemoration for the Second World War. It is located within the churchyard, to the north-east of the church. The memorial is constructed from Portland stone and takes the form of a stone Calvary, featuring a sculpted figure of Christ beneath a canopy hood. Carved floral motifs, along with two shields—one bearing a chalice and the other inscribed with ‘IHS’—are positioned at intervals along the shaft. The shaft rises from a hexagonal plinth, which sits upon a four-stepped, hexagonal base. On the north face of the plinth, carved in an Arts and Crafts-inspired Serif font, is the inscription: IN MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR / LIVES FOR THEIR / COUNTRY DURING / THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918. The names of those who died in the First World War are recorded on two sides of the plinth, while the rear face lists the names of those who died in the Second World War, inscribed above the years 1939-1945.
