Description
The Frilford Garford and Marcham War Memorial is a stone memorial dedicated to the First World War, built in 1920, with an additional inscription added after the Second World War. Made of Portland stone, it is located on Frilford Road in Marcham and faces north.
The memorial is tall and narrow, topped with a solid lantern-head cross that features a broken pediment and carved relief. On the front face, there is a depiction of the Calvary of Christ on the cross, flanked by a soldier and a sailor. The reverse face displays a cross with a palm leaf on either side. The lantern is set atop a tall, tapering, octagonal shaft, which is supported by a square plinth resting on a rough-hewn, three-stepped base.
The front face of the plinth is inscribed with the words "TO THE MEN WHO DIED FOR ENGLAND 1914 – 1918 1939 – 1945." The other faces of the plinth are incised with the names MARCHAM, FRILFORD, and GARFORD.
