Description

This is an early 17th-century farmhouse, extended in the early 18th century, and now used as a house. It is located on Mill Road in Marcham. The building is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble with gabled roofs; the front has old clay tiles, while the rear has stone slates. The original plan comprised a single unit, later extended to a two-unit, central-passage layout.

The two-storey, three-window facade features carved consoles supporting a fine early 18th-century pediment hood above an early 18th-century fielded six-panelled door with an overlight. A blocked window is positioned above the door. The right bay has a segmental brick arch over an early 19th-century ten-pane sash, which itself sits above a timber lintel, with late 19th-century two-pane sashes below. The left bay has decorative moulded lintels over an early 19th-century ten-pane sash and a late 19th-century four-light casement window.

The rear elevation includes an 18th-century outshut of limestone rubble with a concrete tile roof on the right, and an 18th-century service wing of limestone rubble with a gabled, old tile roof on the left.

Inside, the ground floor has a stone flag floor. The central passage is accessed via 18th-century two-panelled doors and a plank door to the rear. A quarter-turn staircase and a chamfered beam are on the right. The left-hand room features a ribbed door and a stop-chamfered beam. Winder stairs lead to the rear of the stack, and a blocked two-light diamond-mullioned window is visible. On the first floor, the left room has a plank partition, an early 17th-century panelled door, stepped-stop chamfered beam, and original joists. The room to the right contains a fine early 18th-century bolection-moulded fireplace with flanking doors.
