Description
The Ashley Green War Memorial, built in 1920 by stonemasons J Underwood and Son, is located on a grassed area outside the church of St John The Evangelist. The memorial features a Latin cross made of Portland stone, which stands on an octagonal plinth and a three-stepped octagonal base. It is approximately 3 metres high and includes carved foliate details at the top of the plinth and around the shaft of the cross.
On the north face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "TO the/ GLORY OF GOD/ and in/ HONOURED/ MEMORY of/ the MEN of/ THIS PARISH/ who fell in the/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919." Additionally, along the bottom of the three panels on the north, north-east, and north-west faces, it states: "THEIR NAME/ LIVETH FOR/ EVERMORE."
The names of twenty-two men who died in the First World War are listed on panels on the north-east and north-west faces of the plinth. The southern-facing panel includes the names of four men who died during the Second World War, marked with the dates 1939-1945. All inscriptions are incised and were painted black during repairs in 2012.
