Description
The Tilford Institute is a building constructed in 1893 by Sir Edwin Lutyens in memory of C. A. Anderson. It features red brick at the lower level and a timber frame with rendered infill above, topped by a plain tiled, hipped roof that sweeps out to the eaves. The structure is built on two levels, with a basement at the front and a gable end facing the street. It has a buttressed plinth that includes an in-built bench beneath the main floor, with an attic above.
To the left, there is a large angle bay window, while the center displays decorative framing and a plaster cartouche to the right, positioned beneath a leaded, half-oval window and a pentice roof. The main window has a jettied range above it, featuring decorative bracing and a leaded attic window. An arched door is located to the right of the center on the basement level. The building also includes leaded casement windows on the return fronts, double doors on the right-hand return front, and three massive diagonal stacks to the right.
