Description
The lamp post outside the entrance to Cedar Court in Farnham is a late-19th century gas street lamp that has been converted to electricity. It features a tapering octagonal shaft made of painted cast iron, which sits on a moulded octagonal plinth with a band of necking. Atop the post is a simple quadrangular lantern made of metal and glass, supported by four swan-neck metal arms and finished with a crown crested finial. There is no visible foundry name on the post.
Gas street lighting was first introduced in London in 1816, and by 1840 it had become common in many towns. Electric lighting began to appear in 1879, with the first installation in London. The lamp post at Cedar Court is similar to others installed in Farnham during the late-19th century.
This lamp post is listed for its architectural interest as a good example of a late-19th century gas lamp post and for its group value with other listed lamp posts in Castle Hill and Castle Street, which share a similar design and date.
