Description
Brook Lodge, built in 1896 by H. Paxton Watson for the financier Whitaker-Wright, stands on Haslemere Road, Witney. It was constructed in a free Tudor style using snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, and features plain tiled roofs. The lodge is arranged in an L-shape and is two storeys high, with projecting two-storey square bays set under gables. Chimneys are present on the right-hand return front of the gabled wing to the right, and additional chimneys are located at the rear. Plaques are affixed to the gables.
On the front of the lodge, a stone mullioned three-light, leaded casement window is located on the first floor, and arched, panelled doors are situated on the ground floor, both sheltered by eyebrow hoods. These features flank a large arched gateway with massive, panelled double gates, which have an arched head and are open. A projecting gabled wing to the right incorporates a jettied first floor and a shallow angle bay on the ground floor, with a three-light leaded casement on the first floor and single-light casements on the ground floor. A further gabled wing extends to the rear right, at a right angle.
