Description

Meadow Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century, an extension added in the 1920s, and further changes in the late 20th century. The building is timber-framed with painted wattle and daub infill set on a brick plinth, while the rear features brick and tile-hung walls. It has plain clay tile roofs that are half-hipped and brick chimneys.

The house is two stories high with two bays and has a baffle-entry layout, along with a side outshut on the right that is part of a three-bay early 20th-century addition. There is also a further two-bay addition on the left that projects at the front, along with late 20th-century single-storey extensions at the rear. The timber frame displays small square panels and tension braces.

Throughout the property, there are 20th-century wooden casement windows, mostly with two or three lights, and many at the rear are leaded or have small panes. The original section at the front features a two-light window on the left and a three-light window on the right on each floor, with a door on the right aligned with paired stacks and an additional stack to the rear left. The eaves show exposed rafter feet.

At the rear, the ground floor of the original section is made of red brick with blue headers in Flemish bond, set on a rubblestone and brick plinth, while the first floor is tile-hung. This section has a blocked central doorway with a late 20th-century double door and sidelights to the left, and a three-light window to the right, with additional windows above featuring three and two lights. The original outshut on the left has a two-light window on the ground floor.

Inside, the original section retains its timber frame, including a partition wall between the bays, with curved foot braces on the first floor. The right bay on the ground floor has an inglenook fireplace, large-scantling joists, and a spine beam with stepped cyma stops. The roof trusses each have three posts up to the collar and clasped purlins, with pegged rafters and wind braces at the left (east) end, which was originally half-hipped, while the right end was originally gabled. Meadow Cottage is an early 17th-century timber-framed house that maintains its original plan and character.
