Description
The boathouse on Thursley Lake was built in 1897 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for financier Whitaker Wright. It features ashlar stonework below with rendered cladding on the end gables and has plain tiled roofs. The building has a T-shaped plan, with a short arm extending into the lake.
On the lakefront elevation, there is a central bay that projects and is topped with a pediment, supported by paired Doric pilasters. A strapwork cartouche is located in the tympanum above a pedestal. Circular steps extend into the lake from the center of the pedestal plinth, with flights on either side leading to a stone-paved balcony in front of two-windowed sections that flank the central projection. The windows on either side have 20th-century casements positioned between Doric pilasters and beneath an eaves cornice. The ends of the boathouse feature semi-circular projections with turned wooden balusters above, flanked by scroll decorations.
The lower level has a central door leading to the boathouse below, with another entrance above that connects to a stone-flagged passage back to the bank. The bankside elevation has a modillion eaves cornice and a central entrance flanked by two columns in antis, topped by a large arched Carolean porch hood supported by elaborately carved scroll brackets. Gabled pediments adorn the return fronts, featuring plasterwork cartouches. The basement has semi-circular arched openings with voussoirs above, and there are double wicket gates across the front. Curving quadrant retaining walls at the ends of the boathouse along the bank are complemented by steps decorated with scroll motifs.
