Description
The temple on the eastern edge of Thursley Lake is a structure built in the 19th or early 20th century, designed in the Beaux Arts style. It features smooth ashlar stone and a glazed copper lantern on top. The temple has four flat faces oriented towards the compass points, with recessed canted angles between them. Ionic columns in antis stand on pedestals, supporting a pulvinated frieze and bead and egg mouldings at the angles. The northeast side has bronze doors, while the other flat sides have windows with copper lattice glazing bars. Above, there is a stone dome adorned with male and female herms over the cornice and flanking lantern. Inside, the floor is made of stone flags. This temple is one of several garden ornaments in the grounds of Witley Park, created for financier Whitaker-Wright by H. Paxton-Watson.
