Description

GODALMING MEADROW SU 9844 3/161 (east side) 16.5.75 Unitarian Chapel and Cottage GV II

Unitarian Chapel with caretaker's cottage. 1789, altered and added to. Red- brown brick in English bond, the chapel with stucco scored to resemble ashlar. Plain tile roof. 2-storey cottage, chapel one tall storey; 4 bays, the left- hand bay being the caretaker's cottage with a straight joint between this and the chapel. Chapel: plinth; rendered raised quoins; gabled porch between 2 left bays with plinth, round-arched door of 6 flush panels, cyma-reversa moulded kneelers, ashlar coping and gable cross; three full-height, round-arched windows with glazing bars, lower part of left one being a double door with tall, glazed, round-arched top panels; rendered coved eaves continued across cottage which has door of 6 flush panels (top 2 glazed) in wood architrave under canopy on right of 3-light C20 window to each floor lower one segmental-brick-arched. Hipped roof to whole, with cross-ridge stack above porch and two at left end. Weather- boarded addition at left end not of special interest. Interior: the 2 right- hand bays of the chapel form the worship area, having bench around walls and gallery over left-hand bay with plain panelled front supported by cross-beam on 2 plain columns.
