Description
The wall along Thames Street forms the eastern boundary of the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin. It dates from the 18th and 19th centuries and is made of red brick. The wall is approximately 6 feet high and extends for 20 metres at a right angle to Thames Street. At the junction of two ranges, there is a square pier that stands about 9 feet high on a pedestal. Along Thames Street, there is a brown brick wall with a plinth and pier buttresses, initially around 6 feet high, which steps up to 6½ feet after 20 metres and features stone coping. There is a further stretch of approximately 70 metres without coping, leading to a square, red brick pier that is about 8 feet high. The wall continues with offset coping leading to stone gate piers that have moulded plinths and caps. This wall is a prominent feature of the street.
