Description

The Magpie Hotel is a hotel dating from around 1850. It features incised whitewashed stucco at the bottom and colourwashed roughcast above, topped with a slate roof. The building has three storeys over a basement, with rendered stacks at the rear and right. There are string courses above the ground and first floors. The front is regular, showcasing cambered-head plate-glass sash windows set in moulded surrounds. There are four windows on the first and second floors, with paired plate-glass sashes under a common cambered head and in moulded surrounds, flanked by vermiculated roundels on the ground floor. To the right of the centre, there are paired half-glazed doors within a portico supported by Doric columns, which stand on plinths and exhibit marked entasis. To the left, there are double doors under a flat hood on braces and Doric pilasters. The basement windows are blocked. A plaque on the building notes that it was the first meeting place of the Grand Order of Water Rats in 1889. The hotel is included for its group value.
