Description
No 1, Church Approach is a medieval hall house with two bays, which was refaced in the 18th century and has a 17th-century wing at the rear. The front range is made of brick and features a plain tiled roof with gablets. It has two storeys and two windows, with two-light casements and a central doorcase. The 17th-century wing displays exposed timber framing with square panels and red brick infilling, topped by a tiled gabled roof. There is a massive brick stack at the junction of the wing and a simple stack above the ridge, along with casement windows. A later brick porch has been added, and there is a modern lean-to enclosing the south wall. Inside the front part, there is a crown post roof with a tie beam and collar purlins, along with a later inserted floor supported by massive exposed joists and a partition on the central truss. The 17th-century wing contains a large bricked-in inglenook and a smaller fireplace above.
