Description
No. 4 Shrewsbury Road is a house dating from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a timber-framed structure with plaster and painted brick infill, topped by a plain tile roof. The building consists of a two-bay hall with a cross-wing that projects to the left. It has one storey and an attic, with framing that includes irregular square panels, three of which extend from the cill to the wall-plate, supported by short straight tension braces. The gable of the cross-wing is decorated with herringbone patterns. The windows are irregularly arranged, with one late 20th-century casement window on the first floor of the cross-wing and two on the ground floor, separated by a brick pillar. The hall range features a full gabled dormer with a four-light late 19th-century casement window, and a three-light casement window below on the ground floor. The entrance is through a boarded door located in the right return of a lower early 19th-century gabled brick addition at the front. There is an integral stack on the left side of the cross-wing and an external end stack on the right side of the hall range. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
