Description

Gate House Cottage and Old Hall Cottage is a house that has been divided into two separate residences. It dates back to the 17th century, with significant additions and alterations made in 1923. The building features a timber frame with painted brick infill, a plain tile roof, and red brick stacks positioned behind the ridge of the former gable ends.

The original structure consists of three framed bays and was extended in 1923 with a prominent Dutch-gabled range added to the left side of what is now Old Hall Cottage. A brick addition was made to the right side of the present Gate House Cottage, which includes a gabled range that runs at right angles to the rear. The original part of the house is one storey with an attic. The framing includes square panels with three from the cill to the wall-plate and long straight tension braces.

The windows show irregular fenestration; the ground floor of Gate House Cottage has two late 19th-century casements set within panels of framing to the right of a boarded door that features a flat hood. Old Hall Cottage has a small fixed-light window to the right of its boarded door and a late 20th-century casement to the left, where the wall has been rebuilt further out. There are three 20th-century gabled eaves dormers, two on Old Hall Cottage and one on Gate House Cottage. The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported that the timber frame of the 17th-century part is substantially intact. The 1923 additions are not considered to have special architectural interest.
