Description

Christ Church is a parish church built in 1841 by Edward Haycock. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with machine tile roofs featuring coped verges and moulded eaves cornices. The church consists of a nave and chancel combined into one, with a short sanctuary and an integral west tower. The tower is narrow and divided into three stages, topped with an embattled parapet and heavy corner pinnacles. It has broad lancets with hoodmoulds at the belfry, a west window with two pointed lights and a circular opening above, and a pointed double-chamfered west doorway with a hoodmould.

The nave and chancel are buttressed in five bays, featuring broad lancets linked by a continuous hoodmould. The short sanctuary includes an east window with three stepped lancets. Inside, the triple-lancet east window contains roundels of mid-19th century stained glass in Flemish style by David Evans of Shrewsbury, given by Reverend Richard Scott. There is an organ gallery supported by cast-iron pillars at the west end, re-used 17th century wainscot panelling in the nave, and medieval glazed floor tiles in the sanctuary. The octagonal pulpit is made from re-used panelling, with an inscription dated 1635 from a pew in the former church of St Samson. The circular Romanesque-style font, made in 1842, is said to be a copy of the one that was previously in St Samson's, which was demolished in 1840 when Christ Church was built as its replacement.
